COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – Coldwater City Manager Keith Baker told the Downtown Development Authority Board on Wednesday that the city has cited the owner of the former Merriman Dental Office building at 25 West Chicago due to the continuing problem of bricks falling from the structure which was built in 1872.
Barricades were set up for the second time in four years in early June after bricks fell from the building.
Pedestrians and drivers on South Monroe have had to deal with the barricade ever since. D.D.A. Board Member Al Rakocy wondered on Wednesday if the city was going to be “stuck with that barricade forever”.
Baker told the board that as of now, the matter is heading to court.
The building was sold in July of 2024 by Rhonda Ives and Neil Degolia after being listed for $140,000.
The previous owners made some repairs to the historic building. South Monroe between U.S. 12 and West Pearl had to be shut down for five days in August of 2022 when pieces of the building fell off.
