BATTLE CREEK, MI (WTVB) – Despite playing down three players late in the game, the Coldwater High School boys varsity soccer team held on for a 2-1 Interstate 8 Conference win at Harper Creek Thursday.
After a defensive battle for most of the first half, Ahmed Norman scored the opening goal of the game with 4:50 to play before halftime, assisted by Gio Gonzalez.
The Cardinals got their second goal just four minutes into the second half from Abdulhamid Munassar, assisted by Norman.
An altercation between the two teams about halfway through the second half led to the ejection of two players from Coldwater and one from Harper Creek.
With about four minutes left in the game the Cardinals got another red card ejection after a dangerous tackle on a Harper Creek player. The Beavers scored shortly afterward to cut the lead to one, but Coldwater was able to hang on for the win.
The Cardinals are now 9-1 overall and 5-0 in the Interstate 8. A win next Tuesday at Hastings would give them their second straight conference title.
The Coldwater junior varsity team also beat Harper Creek 4-1.
Both teams will host Gull Lake Saturday for non-conference action, with the JV game at 10:30 a.m. and the Varsity at 12:00 p.m.
