GRAND RAPIDS, MI (WTVB) – The two candidates for U.S. Senate in Michigan clashed in their first debate Thursday night. On a Grand Rapids stage, Democratic nominee Abdul El-Sayed went after his Republican opponent Mike Rogers over high fuel costs.
Rogers hit back, saying El-Sayed’s policies will raise the costs of gasoline and utility rates.
The discussion became heated many times during the one hour debate
Moderators at times had a difficult time keeping discussions on track
Reportedly the intense bickering even carried over off camera into commercial breaks.
The debate comes as a recent Fox News poll shows a close race, as 50 percent of likely voters backed El-Sayed while 49 percent supported Rogers, which is within the margin of error.
Both will be back on the debate stage in two weeks in Detroit.
