COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – The Coldwater City Council voted in favor of moving forward with a major revitalization project at 62 W Chicago St, following a recommendation from the city’s Obsolete Property Rehabilitation Act (OPRA) Review Committee.
Submitted by City Assessor Samantha Albright, the proposal outlines a massive investment by Tau Ceti Extraction LLC to fully renovate a mostly vacant, functionally obsolete 3,600-square-foot commercial building originally constructed in 1977.
The approved action sets a formal public hearing for October 26, 2026, where the council is expected to officially adopt a resolution approving a 12-year OPRA tax abatement certificate, subject to final state approval, of which Albright says as of now will no longer be available at the first of next year.
Albright says the plans for the buildings future following the renovations will have a positive impact on the downtown area
The newly constructed second floor will house a doctor’s office alongside two additional tenant spaces. Beyond refurbishing an ADA-deficient property that has sat largely empty for five years, the development is projected to generate substantial economic activity, creating numerous construction roles and sustaining approximately 15 permanent jobs upon completion.
