UNION CITY, MI (WTVB) – Union City Community Schools made district history this past Monday evening, by successfully hosting its first-ever event.”Literacy Under the Lights”
The first-of-its-kind initiative transformed Alumni Field at Union City High School into a community reading hub.
The evening kicked off with a Community Tailgate in the parking lot featuring food and interactive educational games hosted by local organizations.
Union City Elementary principal Michael Bates says students then made a grand entrance onto the turf, simulating the high school football team’s game-day tradition to begin an evening dedicated to celebrating a lifelong love of reading.
Supported by the local Education Foundation and PTO, families also enjoyed free snacks, pizza, and the chance to take home free books and register for book baskets.
Bates says this will likely become an annual event for the district
District organizers praised the high turnout and community spirit, saying that blending athletics with academics successfully achieved their goal of showing students that the entire Union City community is deeply invested in their academic success.
