COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – The Coldwater Fire Department says a family living in the city had to be rescued last night as they were trapped in their house after it was damaged by a tree which hit the residence when high thunderstorm winds blew through the area.
Firemen were busy across the City of Coldwater responding to reports of downed trees and wires when they were dispatched to the home on Elm north of Perkins Street shortly after 9:30 p.m. They discovered a large cedar tree up against the north side of the house which had apartments on the first and second floors. The tree struck the roof, snapped power lines and destroyed a second floor side stairwell.
Firemen put a ladder up to a window and talked to a woman and her 3 children in the upper story apartment to make sure they were OK and then entered the front of the home and went up the stairs and led the family down and outside.
The other people living downstairs were also evacuated from the house.
The fire department cleared the scene around 10:20 p.m..
