COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – The Coldwater Downtown Development Authority decided on Wednesday morning to donate $1,500 to a local committee which was formed to preserve the historic First Presbyterian Church steeple.at 52 Marshall Street.
Representatives from the Save the People’s Steeple Committee told the D.D.A. Board the cost of repairs is between $400,000 and $700,000 and those costs are expected to go up.
Sarah Zimmer said local fundraising is ongoing.
There have been fears the steeple will have to be removed for safety purposes. It’s part of the city’s logo and is considered to be a key symbol for Coldwater.
The 185 foot tall steeple is one of the highest in southern Michigan. The church was built in the 1860’s and the steeple was reconstructed in 2004 thanks to community donations.
The money donated to the Save the Steeple project was already in the D.D.A. budget. The funds were originally donated for last month’s Spanish Heritage Festival which was later cancelled due to concerns about possible action by I.C.E. agents.
