COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – The Coldwater lady Cardinal gymnastics team had their home opener Wednesday night in a double dual meet against Monroe High School and Ann Arbor Skyline High School. Coldwater won both matchups with a team Regional qualifying score of 132.925. Monroe was second with over 124 points, followed by Ann Arbor Skyline at 26.425.
The Cardinal home opener each year is dedicated as the Jillian Crist Memorial meet. Even though COVID-19 protocols made things a bit different this year, the gymnasts still collected more than two dozen bottles of ketchup to donate to the food pantry in her honor. Announcer Mark Crist and his wife Louise were on hand to award two gymnasts the Miss Con”Jilly”lity award as a thank you to the team for keeping Jillian’s memory alive. This year Karley Knisely and Abby Travelbee were both recognized.
Coldwater opened the evening on the Vault where Travelbee finished first with a score of 8.5. A tie for second place went to juniors Layla Schoch and McKenna Hantz at 8.3.
Coldwater competed on the uneven bars in the second rotation and they dominated the event, claiming 7 of the top 10 spots. Once again Travelbee led the team with a score of 8.8. Schoch was third.
The third rotation was the balance beam where Coldwater earned eight individual qualifying scores and took eight of the top 10 spots. Travelbee posted 8.95 points for her nearly flawless routine. Charlotte Calhoun was third.
Coldwater saved the best for last with their floor exercise routines. The Cardinals posted an impressive ten individual qualifying scores earning 34.625 points, their highest as a team for the evening. Layla Schoch took top honors with her score of 9.0. Leah Goodwin placed second while third place went to McKenna Hantz.
Travelbee won the All-Around with 34.6 points. Schoch was third while Calhoun was fourth.
The gymnasts will host five other schools on Saturday in two different sessions for their 11th annual Stick It For a Cure event. The invitational raises cancer awareness and supports the local oncology center at ProMedica Regional Hospital.
