EAST LANSING, MI (WTVB) – There was a surprise elimination from this year’s Michigan High School Athletic Association Football Playoffs before any of the qualifying teams could take the field.
The MHSAA announced on Thursday that Grand Rapids Catholic Central has been withdrawn from the Division 5 Playoffs because the school used an ineligible player in six games this season. Comstock Park, who would have faced Catholic Central Friday night, advances to take on either Berrien Springs or Lake Odessa Lakewood in a District Final next weekend.
The Cougars had finished the regular season 7-2, including 5-1 with the ineligible player participating. Those six games will now be forfeited by Catholic Central, although the additional regular season victories for their opponents will not affect their playoff point averages or any of their current or future matchups in this year’s playoffs.
The MHSAA Playoffs begin for the rest of the field with 11-player District Semifinal and 8-player Regional Semifinals on Friday and Saturday. Three Branch County teams made this year’s playoffs:
- The Coldwater Cardinals will travel to Middleville to take on Thornapple Kellogg Friday at 7 p.m., with live coverage on WTVB beginning at 6:30 p.m. Both the Cardinals and Trojans are 6-3.
- The Union City Chargers will face the Detroit Community Hurricanes Friday at 7 p.m. at Star International Academy in Dearborn Heights.
- The Bronson Vikings will head east to Ottawa Lake Saturday afternoon for a 1 p.m. contest against the Whiteford Bobcats. We’ll have coverage of that game on WTVB beginning Saturday at 12:30 p.m.
