DEARBORN HEIGHTS, MI (WTVB) – The Union City Chargers will play for an MHSAA Division 7 District championship next week after they rallied to defeat the Detroit Community Hurricanes 16-6 on the Hurricanes’ home field at Star International Academy on Friday night.
The Chargers were not affected by the nearly two hour bus ride to the Detroit area. The Chargers defense held the Hurricanes offense to just 124 yards and the Union City rushing attack got into gear in the second half as they finished with 164 yards for the night.
Detroit Community broke a scoreless tie on a 15-yard touchdown pass with 35 seconds left in the first half, which gave them a 6-0 lead at the intermission.
Union City controlled the second half thanks to their stingy defense and a punishing rushing attack. Trey McDonald’s 8-yard touchdown and subsequent two-point conversion midway through the third quarter put Union City ahead 8-6.
McDonald sealed the win with another 8-yard TD and two-point conversion with 5:04 left in the game which made it a two possession contest.
The Hurricanes managed to drive into the Chargers’ red zone, but they were stopped at the 16-yard line on fourth down, and Union City was able to run out the clock.
With the win, Union City improved to 8-2 and will host the 6-4 Jonesville Comets next weekend at Alumni Field.
Unlike last year, when Hanover-Horton stunned the Bronson Vikings on a last-minute desperation pass for a touchdown, there was no Moscow Township Miracle this year. In the Battle of the Comets on Friday night, Jonesville defeated top seeded Hanover-Horton 36-22 for their fourth straight win.
