INDIANAPOLIS, IN (WTVB) – Indiana Governor Mike Braun announced on Wednesday that he is extending the state’s gas tax holiday through December 4.
The extension comes via Executive Order, which extends a statewide energy emergency by another 30 days to keep both the state’s 7% gasoline usage tax and its gasoline excise tax suspended across all 92 counties.
Combined, the dual tax pauses yield an estimated 61 to 64 cents per gallon in direct savings for drivers at the pump.
Braun says “Affordability is my top priority, and I’m using every tool available to help Hoosier families and farmers save money at the pump,” noting that the state will leverage its existing financial reserves to keep local infrastructure and Department of Transportation projects fully funded despite the temporary loss of revenue.
Alongside the relief for standard motorists, Governor Braun signed a companion executive order continuing the suspension of special fuel restrictions for the state’s agricultural sector. The directive permits Indiana farmers and timber harvesters to utilize tax-exempt, dyed diesel fuel in qualifying highway transport vehicles through the December 4 deadline, an exemption designed to significantly mitigate transport overhead during the active corn and soybean harvest season.
Industry analysts and state observers indicate this action is highly likely to be the final month-long extension under the governor’s unilateral emergency authority, as the Indiana General Assembly is scheduled to reconvene for its next legislative session in early January.
