QUINCY, MI (WTVB) – in a cross county boys high school basketball matchup Tuesday night, the undefeated Quincy Orioles pulled away from Coldwater in the second half for a 64-50 non-conference victory over the visiting Cardinals. Quincy was ahead 23-20 at halftime and Coldwater was still within striking distance at the end the third quarter, trailing the Orioles 42-36 heading into the final period. But this was Quincy’s night in the end as they nailed down a double digit win with a 22-14 edge in the fourth quarter.
The Orioles warmed up from the field in the second half when they shot 56% compared to 29% before the break. Coldwater couldn’t keep pace and mistakes cost the Cardinals with 18 turnovers compared to just 7 for Quincy. Jake Rider had a game-high 25 points for the Orioles while Coldwater’s Collin Warner was close behind with 24 points and they were honored as the McDonald’s Player of the Game for their respective teams. Rider also had a team-high 9 rebounds while Jake Jodway added 18 points and 8 rebounds for Quincy. The Cardinals had one other player besides Warner in double figures with 11 points for Nate Waterbury.
The Orioles improved their record to 9-0 while Coldwater hasn’t won since their season opener and slips to 1-10. Both teams return to league action Friday night with an Interstate Eight Conference game for Coldwater at home against Marshall while Quincy has a Big Eight contest at Reading.
In last night’s junior varsity game at Quincy, the Cardinals beat the Orioles 54-17 with 12 points for Brady Beckhusen.
Elsewhere last night, in boys hoops, Union City posted a 57-54 win at home over Mendon. The non-conference victory moved the Chargers record to 9-1. Leading the way for Union City were Darren Austin with 16 points and Jalen Boes with 15. Mendon won the JV game 51-39 despite 28 points from Union City’s Devon Watson. And Tekonsha lost at Hillsdale Academy 68-41. Riley Lloyd had 13 points and Chyene Wiescholek 10 as the Indians slipped to 3-7.
Tuesday night in girls basketball, in the Big Eight, Quincy fell at Concord 74-19 with 8 points and 6 rebounds for Katie Spalding. The defeat dropped their record to 1-11 and 1-6 in conference play. Also in the Big 8, Union City lost 54-36 at Homer. Rachel Grinnell had a double double in the defeat with 15 points and 11 rebounds while Riley Smith added 10 points. Union City is now 0-7 in the conference and 2-11 overall.
Bronson was a winner at home over Centreville 47-33. Kinslea Blouin had a game-high 22 points for the Lady Vikings, who improved to 9-2 overall and 3-0 in BCS Conference play.
Tonight in high schools sports, there’s wrestling with Coldwater at Jackson Lumen Christi, Quincy is at Jonesville, Bronson has a quad at home, and Union City also has a quad at home. And in bowling, Coldwater travels to the M-66 Bowl for a match against Pennfield. Beginning next season, bowling at Coldwater High School will for the first time be a regular school sponsored team activity, a promotion from the unfunded club team status with the changeover approved Monday by the Coldwater Board of Education.
