MONROE COUNTY, MI (WTVB) – 7th District Congressman Tim Walberg welcomed Andrew Wheeler, Acting Administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency, to the Western Lake Erie Basin in Monroe County Friday to discuss protecting the Great Lakes. They saw firsthand the benefits of the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative, which according to Walberg “…goes into everything from harbor maintenance to shipping issues to dealing with Asian Carp and Grass Carp concerns.”
They toured Pointe Mouillee, site of an ongoing wetland restoration project, and hosted a roundtable with farmers at Horkey Farms in Dundee.
Walberg has introduced bipartisan legislation, the Great Lakes Agricultural Stewardship Act, which promotes conservation efforts throughout the Great Lakes region. The bill provides federal assistance to Great Lakes states that administer voluntary assurance programs to help farms minimize agricultural pollution risks, like harmful algae blooms on Lake Erie.
