HASLETT, MI (WTVB) – A young Coldwater Cardinal squad dropped a non-conference game at Haslett 28-7 in their season opener on Friday night. Haslett outgained the Cardinals in total yards 300-152. The lone Coldwater score came on a 21 yard touchdown pass from Gage McGuire to Matt Gipple midway through the final quarter. Coldwater’s Damon Beckhusen rushed for 68 yards on 28 carries. Dylan Targgart led the Cardinals defense with nine tackles.

In other games involving Branch County teams, Jake Gifford’s 85 yard kickoff return for a touchdown was the only score for the Orioles as Constantine defeated Quincy 42-7. The Falcons had 315 yards of total offense including 275 yards on the grounds. Quincy was guilty of committing four turnovers.
Union City opened up the season with a 53-0 victory against Galesburg-Augusta. Josh Watson passed for three touchdowns while Gavin Hooker scored three TD’s including one on a 60 yard punt return.
