HASTINGS, MI (WTVB) – History was made in the Hastings High School gym for Coldwater’s Gage McGuire, as he became the third Cardinal boys basketball player to amass 1,000 career points in their 77-69 win over the Saxons.
McGuire finished with a game-high 26 points, 7 rebounds, 4 assists, and a steal, and was our McDonald’s Player of the Game. His career point total now stands at 1,020 and counting.
Dylan Targgart added 21 points and 7 rebounds, while Spencer Rodesiler scored 10 as the Cardinals improve to 3-0 overall, 1-0 in the Big 8.

Quincy posted a 75-58 win against visiting Springport. With the Spartans keying on big man William Dunn, the Orioles responded by draining 13 three-point shots. Dunn still finished with a game-high 27 points, while Logan Banks had 16 and Caleb McCavit 11. Quincy improves to 3-0 overall, 1-0 in the Big 8.
Union City edged Concord on the road 59-55 behind 27 points from Brandon Roberts and double-double from Larson Kever, who had 21 points and 14 rebounds. The Chargers improve to 2-1 overall, 1-0 in the Big 8.
Bronson lost at Homer 67-52 to drop to 0-4 overall, 0-1 in the Big 8. Hudson Wotta led the Vikings with 23 points.
Reading improved to 2-0 with a 57-51 win at Jonesville.
HS GIRLS BASKETBALL
Coldwater dominated their Interstate 8 opener at Hastings from the opening tip, as the Cardinals posted a 61-21 win over the Saxons. Coldwater led 12-2 after 1 and 32-4 at the half. It was 52-13 after three quarters, with most of the fourth quarter played with a running clock. Carlee Crabtree led all scorers with 17 points, 3 rebounds, 4 assists, and 3 steals, while Tyler Scheid had 10 points, 6 rebounds, 2 assists, and 3 steals, and our McDonald’s Player of the Game, Autumn Sunderland, came off the bench to contribute 8 points, 3 rebounds, and 2 assists. Coldwater improves to 2-0 overall, 1-0 in the Interstate 8, and will face East Grand Rapids this afternoon at Kalamazoo Central High School as part of the Lady Giant West Side Showcase. Tip-off is scheduled for 3, and our pre-game coverage will begin at 2:45.
