COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – A woman has been charged in Branch County District Court in connection with a Coldwater Township traffic accident with serious injuries that happened late last year.
21-year old Megan Bretschneider of Niles was arraigned yesterday on a charge of OUIL causing a serious injury accident and operating with a blood alcohol content of point 17 or more, which put the charge into the so-called “super drunk” category.
The two car crash happened on December 2, 2017 around 8:30 p.m.on US 12 near Lott Road. Michigan State Police say Bretschneider’s car was eastbound when her vehicle drifted into the westbound lane and collided head on with a Ford Bronco.
The SUV was driven by 38-year old Christopher Smith, who had just moved to Quincy from Missouri with his wife the day before the accident. Smith’s 35-year old wife was pinned in the car and according to troopers suffered multiple fractures and was airlifted from the scene to a Ft. Wayne hospital for treatment.
Her husband was treated and released from ProMedica Coldwater Regional Hospital. Bretschneider was flown to Bronson Hospital in Kalamazoo and treated for non-life threatening injuries.
A warrant for her arrest was issued last Thursday and she turned herself in to be booked at the Branch County jail Tuesday morning. Bretschneider was released after posting a $25,000 bond and is due back in District Court for a probable cause hearing September 13, 2018.
