COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – On a 3-2 vote, the Branch County Board of Commissioners passed a resolution Wednesday which opposes the legalization of marijuana for general use.
Voters in Michigan will decide in November if recreational marijuana should be legalized in the state.
Commissioners Terri Norris and Leonard Kolcz voted no. Norris felt the resolution was a waste of time since voters will decide the issue in six weeks.
Commission Chair Ted Gordon along with commissioners Randall Hazelbaker and Don Vrablic voted yes.
The resolution stated that according to “Monitoring the Future, 2017”, marijuana use has increased to 24 percent among adolescents in eighth, tenth and twelth grades combined and that one in ten high school seniors have vaped marijuana in the past year.
In addition, the resolution cited a study by the University of Colorado in Denver which reported marijuana impaired driver related fatalities went up 114 percent in Colorado since that state legalized the use of marijuana.
