UNION CITY, MI (WTVB) – All Branch County youngsters are now on summer vacation.
Union City students began their summer vacation Wednesday following a half day of classes. Quincy students got out last Tuesday, while classes ended in Coldwater and Bronson May 31.
Union City Community Schools will be getting in line with other Branch County school calendars this fall when classes resume August 21, 2019.
All of the Branch County districts will now be starting classes before Labor Day after getting waivers from the State of Michigan.
The state passed a law in 2005 which mandated schools could not start until after Labor Day but it allowed districts to start early if they got a waiver.
More and more districts have gotten waivers for early starts in recent years which has angered tourism officials who lobbied for the 2005 law in the first place.
The Detroit Free Press reported last August that there were 123 waivers that were granted by the state for the 2017-2018 school year.
