THREE RIVERS, MI (WTVB) – The Branch-Hillsdale-St. Joseph Community Health Agency says 14 out of 22 environmental water samples collected at a nursing care facility in St. Joseph County tested positive for the legionella pneumonia bacteria.
There was one confirmed case legionellosis associated with the facility during February.
Based on guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, there is a potential threat to patients and visitors to the facility. An environmental assessment has been conducted and remediation efforts have gotten under way to eliminate the source of the contamination.
Public health agencies in Michigan have also taken steps to minimize the risk of infection.
The Community Health Agency, along with the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, continues to investigate.
