LANSING, MI (WTVB) – Republican State Representative Eric Leutheuser voted in the majority early Thursday morning as the State House passed its own version of a plan to fix car insurance coverage in Michigan.
The legislation passed 61-49 just after 2:00 a.m..
“This reform is one of the main reasons I wanted to represent Hillsdale and Branch counties in the state Legislature,” Leutheuser said. He added “as a former car dealership owner, I heard about it from customers for years – and I know it is one of our state’s biggest problems. Car insurance is too expensive, and that has got to change. I have been frustrated at the lack of progress on this issue,”
The Senate bill is now headed toward the House and this House Bill is now headed for the Senate.
Governor Whitmer has already threatened to veto the Senate version, and she hinted in Holland on Wednesday that her signature may be contingent on the GOP supporting her budget.
Backers say the House-approved plan allows those currently using the coverage to keep it, and those who want it in the future to continue buying it – while providing more affordable options.
