NEW WORK, NY (WTVB) – Houston Astros pitcher Justin Verlander is the American League Cy Young Award winner. The 36-year-old beat out teammate Gerrit Cole and Tampa Bay’s Charlie Morton for the award. Verlander led the AL with 21 wins while finishing second behind Cole with a 2.58 ERA. He also was second behind Cole with 300 strikeouts. Verlander becomes the 21st player all-time to win multiple Cy Youngs, previously winning one with the Detroit Tigers in 2011.
And New York Mets pitcher Jacob DeGrom is the winner of the National League Cy Young Award for the second straight year. DeGrom received 29 of the 30 first-place votes by the Baseball Writers’ Association of America. DeGrom becomes the 20th pitcher to win multiple Cy Youngs and the 11th to win back-to-back. The 31-year-old right-hander went 11-and-8 with a 2.43 ERA in 32 starts and led the NL with 255 strikeouts. He’s also only the second Met to win more than one Cy Young as a Met, as Tom Seaver won three.
