COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – A potential project to extend improved fiber optic technology to Coldwater Board of Public Utilities customers was discussed Tuesday night during a joint meeting of the CBPU Board of Directors and the Coldwater City Council.
CBPU Director Jeff Budd said one of the objectives of the meeting was to provide a better understanding of fiber technology and what they are trying to do for the community.
The meeting featured several powerpoint and video presentations.
Budd said they are ready to move to the next level of providing residential service after Phase One involved commercial and industrial customers.
Budd said the installation work for residents would take two years to finish and estimated the project will cost over $4 million.
The CBPU Board of Directors approved a proposal last March from Aspen Wireless to provide design services for upgrading the utility’s fiber backbone that was installed in 1997.
Budd said in his report at that time that the systems built on 1990’s technology have performed well, but they now require significant upgrades in order to remain secure and reliable.
