BRONSON TOWNSHIP, MI (WTVB) – Michigan State Police say an Angola, Indiana man was injured early Sunday in a one car crash in Branch County’s Bronson Township.
Troopers said the accident was reported around 4:15 a.m.by a resident in the area of Orland and Kosmerick Roads, who told 911 Central Dispatch that he heard a loud noise and went outside to check but wasn’t able to find anything near his home.
According to State Police, the trooper who investigated the crash discovered an SUV in a field east of Orland Road near the Prairie River. The accident report said that 20-year old Juan Mendoza was alone in his 2002 Cadillac Escalade when he fell asleep at the wheel while southbound on Orland Road and struck a guardrail. State Police said the car then went airborne, flew over the river and landed upright on the ground.
Mendoza wasn’t wearing his seatbelt, but the airbags deployed.
He was transported to ProMedica Coldwater Regional Hospital by Lifecare Ambulance for treatment of what troopers said were non-life threatening injuries with head and hand lacerations.
State Police said Mendoza was cited for careless driving.
