COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – The Michigan Department of Corrections reported on Wednesday night a third prisoner at the Lakeland Correctional Facility has died from COVID-19.
Lakeland has now accounted for three of the 13 prisoner deaths in the Department of Corrections.
Out of 104 inmates who have been tested, Lakeland has 85 inmates who were positive which is the second high number of inmates with coronavirus at any of the Michigan D.O.C. facilities. In addition, 15 prisoners have tested negative while results are pending on four tests.
The Parnall Correctional Facility near Jackson has 162 prisoners with COVID-19 which is the highest in the state.
The D.O.C. says 12 Lakeland prisoners have been moved to a step down unit which is for prisoners who previously tested positive for COVID-19, and have since been medically cleared by the Department’s chief medical officer. These prisoners are symptom free and are no longer considered contagious. Access to the unit is limited and prisoners in the unit do not have contact with the rest of the population.
The D.O.C. also reports that 22 staff members at Lakeland have tested positive for COVID-19.
