PITTSBURGH, PA (WTVB) – The Detroit Tigers return to action tonight as they begin a three-game series against the Pirates in Pittsburgh.
Detroit has been off since Sunday after their series against St. Louis was postponed due to several positive Covid-19 tests in the Cardinals organization. Matthew Boyd, Ivan Nova and Spencer Turnbull are all expected to start for Detroit during the series in Pittsburgh.
The Tigers have released infielder Jordy Mercer to trim their roster to the MLB mandated 28 players. Mercer cleared waivers and was outrighted to Detroit’s alternate training site in Toledo. He has elected to become a free agent and can now sign with another team.
Mercer was 2-for-9 with one run in three games for the Tigers this season.
Major League Baseball has announced makeup dates for the postponed Tigers and Cardinals series. The four games were suspended this week after several people in the St. Louis organization tested positive for Covid-19.
The teams will play two seven-inning doubleheaders on August 13 at Comerica Park and on September 10 at Busch Stadium.
