CLEAR LAKE TOWNSHIP, IN (WTVB) – A Fremont, Indiana man died from his injuries Sunday evening in a motorcycle accident just south of the Michigan-Indiana border.
The Steuben County Sheriff’s Department identified the fatal victim as 48-year-old Kenneth Byrd.
They say deputies and First Responders were called at 6:38 p.m. to the area of County Roads 700 North and 925 East in Clear Lake Township.
Byrd was found partly under a motorcycle. Emergency personnel removed Byrd from under the motorcycle and started treating him but he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene by the Steuben County Coroner’s Office.
Deputies say it appears Byrd was traveling on 925 East at a high rate of speed when some unknown reason, he went off the road.
The motorcycle then struck a wooden post, a small brush and a large stack of firewood. The Sheriff’s Department says Byrd was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash and alcohol is not believed to be a factor in the crash.
The crash is still under investigation by the Sheriff’s Office. The Indiana Department of Natural Resources Law Enforcement Division, Fremont Police, Fremont Fire Rescue, Steuben County EMS and the Steuben County Coroner’s Office assisted at the scene.
