COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – The Coldwater City Council discussed an issue during its regular meeting Monday night that has appeared periodically over the years: complaints about the odors from the Darling Ingredients facility on Jay Street.
Paul Lindsley, the owner of The Ponds of Coldwater, pointed out during the public comment section of the meeting that he has made a number of complaints to Darling officials in the past. His facility hosts weddings, corporate events, and Tibbits Summer Theatre performances, and he feels that he shouldn’t have to deal with the smell from another business.
During his report to the Council, City Manager Keith Baker said that there isn’t a separate ordinance in the books concerning industrial odor complaints. They are typically handled as emissions issues, and a complaint is filed with the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE).
Council agreed to put the issue on the agenda for an upcoming meeting for further discussion.
