BATTLE CREEK, MI (WTVB/WNWN) – This year’s National Cereal Festival in downtown Battle Creek will not take place next month but area food banks as well as the United Way of the Battle Creek and Kalamazoo region will be helped.
Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the National Cereal Festival Committee and Cereal City Development Corporation announced on Thursday they were cancelling the National Cereal Festival which was scheduled for June 13, 2020.
Organizers said in a news release, “the safety and health of the Battle Creek community, out of town guests, staff, volunteers and entertainers are our top priority. Just like every other summer festival, we are following federal, state and city guidelines and are unable to be fully confident that it will be safe to gather in June of 2020.”
In lieu of serving thousands of people free breakfast, Kellogg Company and Post Consumers Brand have donated about 1,500 boxes of cereal to the South Michigan Food Bank.
Kellogg Company will also be making a monetary donation to the United Way of the Battle Creek and Kalamazoo Region.
C.C.D.C. General Manager Ben Randels said, “we are truly disappointed that we are unable to host the festival this year. It is a great kickoff to the summer season. Please stay safe and we look forward to seeing everyone for National Cereal Festival 2021”.
