BATAVIA TOWNSHIP, MI (WTVB) – The Capri Drive-In reopened for the 2020 season on Friday night in clear defiance of Governor Gretchen Whitmer’s COVID-19 restrictions.
The line of vehicles waiting to get in when the gates opened stretched from the Capri east along U.S. 12 well past the Moose Lodge.
Capri owners Tom and Sue Magocs promised to use social distancing guidelines and patrons were told they had to stay in their vehicles.
The drive in was also going to open at 50 percent capacity.
But there was chatter as well as pictures posted on social media sites that clearly showed people outside of their vehicles.
While most social media comments supported the Magocs, others were displeased.
Branch County Central Dispatch received about a half dozen calls Friday night from people reporting that the drive in was violating the governor’s orders.
The Michigan State Police will be investigating the complaints.
In addition, a complaint was made about Adventure Zone being opened on Friday. Adventure Zone, which is next door to the drive-in, had their miniature golf course opened according to a post on the business’ Facebook page. The Branch County Sheriff’s Department is handling that complaint.
