LANSING, MI (WTVB) – An Albion man’s attempt to recall Governor Gretchen Whitmer and Attorney General Dana Nessel failed on Friday when his petitions were turned down by the Board of State Canvassers.
WLNS-TV in Lansing reports Chad Baase submitted the recall petitions but the four members of the board all felt the petitions were not clear or factual.
The board is made up of two Democrats and two Republicans.
In addition to objecting to her actions during the COVID-19 outbreak, Baase wanted Whitmer recalled for not removing Jackson County Sheriff Steve Rand for alledged comments he made.
Legislation signed by Governor Rick Snyder in 2012 makes it tougher to recall a governor. The law reduced the number of days petitioners had to gather signatures from 90 to 60. It also required petitions be clear and factual instead of just being clear. Recalls can not be held during the first and last years of a targeted officials four year term in office.
Snyder felt the law would help ensure recalls were done in a fair and consistent manner and that political gamesmanship on both sides of the aisle would be prevented.
Snyder was targeted for recall in 2011 and 2012. Both of those efforts failed.
If anybody wants to launch a recall against against Whitmer, they would need to collect over one million legitimate signatures and the recall would have to be held before the end of 2021.
