COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – The Branch County Sheriff’s Department says a medical emergency led to Tuesday’s incident on Coldwater’s east side in which six vehicles were damaged at Royal Chevrolet.
The Sheriff’s Department says 64-year-old Danny McCarty of Coldwater was driving south in the Meijer Store parking lot at about 12:25 p.m. when it appeared he had a medical emergency.
This caused his vehicle to drive south through the lawn in front of Meijer. It then gained speed, crossed five lanes of traffic on East Chicago Road and struck the embankment in front of Royal Chevrolet.
This caused McCarty’s vehicle to go airborne and strike a light pole. It then came down on top of two vehicles and
crashed into several other vehicles in Royal Chevrolet’s sales lot.
At least one of the vehicles was considered a total loss. McCarty was found unconscious when an employee from Royal Chevrolet ran out to the accident and an eye witness also stopped to render immediate assistance to the unconscious driver.
Coldwater Fire Rescue and Life Care Ambulance removed McCarty from the vehicle. He was taken to the emergency room at ProMedica Coldwater Regional Hospital in serious condition. McCarty was wearing safety restraints.
No vehicles were struck on East Chicago Road. Sheriff Deputies were assisted by Coldwater Police and Fire Departments, Life Care Ambulance and Royal Chevrolet employees.
