COLDWATER (WTVB) - In high school sports last night, in boy’s soccer, Coldwater dropped a 3-to-1 match at Battle Creek Lakeview. The host Spartans led 2-to-0 at halftime and extended their advantage to 3-to-0 before the Cardinals scored on a goal by Kaliel Alisaid with an assist from Aseel Saeed. Lakeview outshot Coldwater 24-to-12 while Cardinal goalie Patrick Christopher was credited with 15 saves. The defeat left Coldwater with a 4-and-2 record, including 0-and-2 in the SMAC East. The Cardinals are back in action tomorrow at the Brooklyn Columbia Central Invitational.
In last night’s j-v match, Lakeview beat Coldwater 4-to-2. Scoring goals for the Cardinals were Saleh Mousa and Ibrahim Ahmed. Zack Rurka made 7 saves in goal for Coldwater. The j-v record is now 4-and-1.
Also in soccer last night, Quincy was a winner on the road with a 2-to-1 victory at Lenawee Christian. Luke Haberl scored both of the Quincy goals in the first half with assists from Darvarsh Karekal and Jonas Shuerger Dakota Finley had 10 saves in goal for Quincy, which was outshot by the host Cougars 15-to-13 in a very intense, physical match. The Orioles improved their record to 4-and-1 overall and 2-and-0 in the Independent Soccer League. Quincy returns to action Monday with a home match at the AYSO Creal Soccer Complex in Coldwater against Hillsdale Academy.
Turning to volleyball, Coldwater was a winner in four games last night at Jackson Parma Western. The Lady Cardinals defeated the Panthers 25-21, 25-22, 18-25, 25-9. Lindsey Adams had 17 kills for Coldwater along with 2 aces, 5 blocks and 7 digs. Ashley Burkhardt also had 5 blocks and led the way in assists with 27 and in digs with 11. The Lady Cardinals improved their overall record to 12-and-2.
Coldwater also won both of the reserve matches.
The Lady Cardinal’s j-v team beat the Panthers in 2 games to stay undefeated with a 9-and-0 record. Individual leaders for Coldwater were Morgan Klein with 4 aces, 4 kills and 2 blocks. Janie Marso and Paige Holicki also each had 4 kills. Marso added 6 digs, while Meghan Schorfhaar had 6 assists. And the Coldwater freshman team also won in two games. Taylor Wilder had 5 aces, Kaitlyn Vella had 11 assists, MacKenzie Galloway had 7 kills and Serena Robison had 3 digs. The freshmen record is now 12-and-2.
In boy’s tennis, undefeated Coldwater cruised to a 7-to-1 victory yesterday at Battle Creek Central. Winners for the Cardinals at second and third singles were Tyler Harrell and Logan Fielding while doubles victories went to Brad Babjack and Ryan Blancahrd at first doubles, Kelvin Miller and Jon Sammons at second doubles and Jeff Werkman and Juan Hernandez at third doubles. The host Bearcats forfeited in two flights. Coldwater improved its record to 6-and-0.
Week three of the varsity football season kicks off tonight with just one home game for Branch County teams. The schedule includes a renewal of one of the longest running rivalries in Michigan as Coldwater plays at Sturgis, where the host Trojans are 1-and-1 while the Cardinals have an 0-and-2 record. Also tonight it’s Quincy at Concord and Bronson at Edwardsburg while Union City has its home opener against Homer. Meanwhile, Tekonsha plays tomorrow at Jackson DaVinci Institute.
Last night’s reserve football action included Bronson’s junior varsity team losing at home to Edwardsburg 26-to-12. Nick Mitchell scored both of Bronson’s touchdowns on runs of 5 yards and 14 yards. Scotty Wyant led the Vikings on the ground with 93 yards while Bryant Garrett had 92 yards rushing. Mitchell led the way on defense with 8 tackles.
On today’s high school schedule, besides the varsity football, there’s boy’s tennis with Coldwater at Battle Creek Lakeview in a make-up match from last week’s rainout. In girl’s golf, Coldwater plays at the Marshall Invitational.
