COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) - In Branch County high school sports, All-State honors for several Coldwater athletes. In cross country, senior Becca Schott earned All-State recognition with her top 30 finish Saturday in the Division Two finals at Michigan International Speedway. Becca placed 22nd in a new CHS record time of 18.36.2. Three other runners from Branch County competed in the finals at M-I-S, all in the Division Three boy’s race. From Quincy, Zach Slack finished 39th with a personal best time of 16:44, putting him fourth on the all-time fastest junior team at Quincy and the school’s sixth fastest 5K time. Teammate Riley Horn, also a junior, placed 92nd out of the 250 runners. And Bronson junior Matt Cosby finished in 139th place.
In boy’s tennis, Coldwater’s first doubles team of Jon Sammons and Nick Waterbury have been named to the Coach’s Association Division Three All-State doubles team. Coldwater’s number-one singles player Derek Sammons was selected honorable mention All-State
The only Branch County school still competing in the fall sports season is Bronson and tomorrow night, in the Class-C Volleyball Regional Semi-Finals at Jonesville, it will be 8th-ranked Bronson facing off against 3rd-ranked Concord. It’s a six o’clock match and we’ll have live coverage of the action here on AM 1590 and FM 95.5 beginning at 5:45. The winner will advance to Thursday night’s regional title match
The MHSAA football playoffs will continue this coming weekend when regional championships will be decided. Most of the district title games were played on Friday but a handful of contests involving area teams were held on Saturday. In Division Seven, Pewamo-Westphalia, the school that eliminated Union City in the pre-district round, advanced with a 48-to-12 win over Gobles while in Division Eight, top-ranked Mendon beat Climax Scotts 28-to-6. And in eight man football, in a regional final Saturday night, Portland St. Patrick defeated Battle Creek St. Philip 34-to-28.
Practices for the winter high school sports season in Michigan started last week with gymnastics. Today, it’s the opening practice-tryout sessions for girl’s basketball. Then a week from today, practices begin for boy’s basketball and wrestling.
