COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) - In Branch County high school sports, the Friday Night football regular season comes to a close tonight with a pair of county schools, Bronson and Union City, a win away from qualifying for the state playoffs. Coldwater finishes its schedule on the road with the Cardinals taking on Sturgis for the 95th renewal of their rivalry with the Trojans. We’ll have live coverage of the game on AM 1590 and FM 95.5 with the broadcast beginning at 6:30 for the seven o’clock kickoff.
Bronson plays at home against Bath including Armed Forces Recognition night activities. Quincy is at Michigan Center and Union City plays at East Jackson. And in 8-Man football, it’s Tekonsha at Litchfield.
Last night, in volleyball, Quincy pulled out a non-conference win at home over Centreville, beating the Bulldogs 3-to-2. Gaby Masson had a team-high 10 kills while Baily Knaack led the way in digs with 21 and in assists with 17. And Ashton King had a team-high 4 aces.
Also in volleyball, Bronson coach and athletic director Jean LeClair says the Lady Viking’s Dig Pink cancer research fundraiser with last week’s match versus Mendon was able to bring in $4,500 for the Side-Out Foundation. The Dig Pink night was also used to honor two breast cancer survivors, special women who remain active in the community. Recognized were Rose LaMontagne, a 1970 Bronson high graduate who dedicated 23 years to Bronson schools and is known as Miss Rose and a loyal volunteer to this day. And Deb Rifenburgh, another Bronson graduate who went on to become a teacher at Burr Oak. Deb and her husband, Carl, coached Bronson Varsity softball for nine years and also founded the Bronson Equestrian team.
The State Finals in boy’s tennis and girl’s golf are happening today and tomorrow. That includes Coldwater junior golfer Anna Wendorf, who qualified as an individual to play in the Division Three finals at Bedford Valley. The Bronson tennis team will be competing in Division Four at Kalamazoo after the Viking’s second place finish in the regionals.
Today on the Coach’s Corner, it’s Coldwater football coach Jeff Schorfhaar.
