COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – The final week of the regular season in high school football kicked off last night with a Quincy win and a Union City loss in the their Big 8 Cascades Conference Crossover games. Quincy pulled out a 36-30 victory at Addison. The visiting Orioles trailed 24-14 at the half before taking a 30-24 lead in the fourth quarter. Addison answered with a touchdown but failed on the conversion, leaving the game tied at 30-30. Quincy quarterback Nathan Karney then tossed his third touchdown pass of the night with just under 4 minutes remaining to put the Orioles up 36-30 and they were able to hold on for the win and finish with a 4-5 record.
Union City also ended up the season at 4-5 following their 19-16 loss at Grass Lake. The Chargers went down to defeat despite the rushing efforts of senior running back Jalen Boes, who gained 228 yards on 26 carries with one touchdown. His 80-yard run for a score in the third quarter helped Union City take a 16-7 lead before Grass Lake found the end zone late in the period and then added the winning touchdown midway through the fourth quarter.
Week Nine continues tonight as Coldwater’s bid for an undefeated regular season takes the Division 3 sixth-ranked Cardinals on the road to face the Adrian Maples, who have a 2-6 record. Coldwater will most likely host a first round playoff game next weekend with the MHSAA playoff selections and first round pairings to be announced Sunday night. In reserve football last night, in junior varsity action, Coldwater was a winner at home over Adrian 46-14. Logan Fee rushed for 214 yards while Oliver Winter gained 143 yards. On defense, Nathan Spray and Zach Gipple each had six tackles as the Cardinals JV team finished with a 5-4 record. There was no freshman game.
Coldwater’s girls swimming and diving team won their first ever meet last night with the first year program enjoying the victory at home as the Cardinals defeated Charlotte 113-61 at the Brown Aquatic Center. First place individual performances included Jayda Kelly in the 50 and 100 free with a new school record and personal best in the 100 free. Kory Ulrich took first place in the 500 free and 200 individual medley. Megan Hoath placed first in diving. Erica Rodgers won the 100 butterfly, Kenydee Otto the 100 backstroke and Sofia Mongardi the 100 breaststroke. Coldwater also placed first in the 200 medley and freestyle relays. The winning teams included Otto, Ulrich, and Kelly as well as Ella Budd on the medley team and Heather Neitzka on the freestyle team. The Cardinals improved their record on the season to 1-6.
