Michigan State held on for an 81-to-72 victory last night at Penn State. Adreian Payne scored 20 points and grabbed seven rebounds in the win despite missing the first half due to an altercation off the court. The 18th-ranked Spartans, who have now won 15 of the last 19 meetings in the series, improved to 4-and-1 in the Big Ten and 15-and-3 overall. Payne and teammate Branden Dawson reportedly got in an argument at the team's hotel which resulted in a scuffle and a dented wall.
Michigan State had a 16-point lead in the second half but the Nittany Lions pulled to within 5 with about a minute and a half left before the Spartans connected on 8-of-10 free throws down the stretch to seal the win. Michigan at ninth-ranked Minnesota. Last night in the Mid-American Conference in Kalamazoo, Western Michigan snapped a three game skid by trouncing Toledo 79-to-56. Darius Paul and David Brown had 15 points apiece for the Broncos while Shayne Whittington recorded his fifth double-double of the season with 12 points and 13 rebounds.
W-M-U led all the way and improved to 9-and-7 on the season and 1-and-2 in the MAC.
