9COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – In a Branch Countycross county boys basketball matchup Tuesday, Coldwater was a winner at home over Quincy 67-48 as the Cardinals hosted the second annual “Hoops for Hope” game benefitting the Branch County Suicide Prevention Coalition.
It was a close first half with a 14-14 tie at the end of the first quarter and the two teams were even at 24 at halftime. Coldwater then made its move in the third quarter on offense and defense with a 20-2 outburst, putting the Orioles down 44-26 heading into the final period when the Cardinals closed out the 19 point victory.
Sophomore Brady Beckhusen had a career-high 26 points in the win and was our McDonald’s Player of the Game for Coldwater. Zach Murphy added 14 points while Colin Warner had 11.
Brandon Gary earned Player of the Game honors for Quincy with a team-high 19 points while Quinn Eifrid added 14 points. The non-conference loss dropped the Orioles record to 5-4 while the Cardinals improved to 8-3. Coldwater returns to action Friday at home against Marshall on Hall of Fame Night while Quincy is at Homer.
In last night’s Junior Varsity game in Coldwater, the Cardinals outlasted Quincy in overtime, beating the Orioles 57-55. Ethan Wiley had a game-high 21 points in the win while for Quincy, Caleb McCavit had 17 points and Austin Rathbun 12. There was no freshman game.
Also last night in boys hoops, Bronson travelled to Battle Creek St. Philip for a non-conference contest and the visiting Vikings beat the Tigers 67-49. Bronson had just a 27-26 lead at the half but opened the third quarter on a 13-4 run to pave the way for their second win in nine games this season. Branson Thenen had a game-high 24 points for the Vikings along with 9 rebounds while Jonah Klingler added 14 points.
Tekonsha lost on the road, falling 67-55 to North Adams Jerome. Andy Galliers had a double-double in the defeat with 23 points and 15 rebounds while Connor Jenkins added 17 points for the Indians, who slip to 1-10.
In girls basketball Tuesday, Branch County rivals Quincy and Union City squared off at Union City where the host Chargers got by the Orioles 33-30. Quincy had a 21-20 lead after 3 quarters before Union City won the final period 13-8. Freshman Autumn Carpenter had a game-high 14 points for the Chargers while Allison Adams had 13 rebounds as Union City improved to 2-5 in the Big Eight and 3-10 overall. Payton Hines had 11 points in the loss while Allison Parshall had 12 rebounds with the Orioles slipping to 0-12 and 0-7 in the conference.
Yesterday in varsity bowling, Coldwater hosted Charlotte at Midway Lanes and split with the visiting Orioles. The Coldwater boys team won 30-0 to improve to 6-0 in the Interstate Eight. Alec Keplinger had a pair of high games, rolling a 255 and 247. There was no JV match.
The Coldwater girls squad lost 24-6 with a high score of 223 for Sadie Youse. The girls record is now 4-2. The junior varsity remains undefeated with a 30-0 win over Charlotte. Coldwater has another home match this afternoon against Marshall.
Tonight in high school sports, in wrestling, Coldwater is at home to face Jackson Lumen Christi while Quincy hosts Union City and Springport. And Bronson has a BCS quad meet at Colon.
