COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – Last night’s Coldwater City Council meeting lasted less than 20 minutes and after they adjourned, Council members toured the new Dr. Robert W. Browne Aquatic Center, which is set to open to the public early next month. Dates were announced for an open house and the opening day for the public to use the Aquatic Center located north of Legg Middle School.
Swimming lessons at the facility for Coldwater High School and Middle School students started last Tuesday along with lifeguard classes. The open house is scheduled for Thursday, February 26th from 6 pm-7:30 pm with the Aquatic Center then open for the public to use for the first time on Monday, March Second. The pool will be in operation seven days a week, 6 am to 7 pm Monday through Friday, 10 am to 5 pm Saturday and 10 am to 3 pm Sunday. Coldwater City residents are eligible for a 50% discount on all pool fees.
The Aquatic Center and the expanded Heritage Park recreation facility were made possible as part of a $14.6 million gift to the City of Coldwater from Coldwater native Dr. Robert W. Browne. The expanded recreation center opened in mid January.
An agreement between the City of Coldwater and the Coldwater School District calls for the school system to operate and maintain the aquatic center while being responsible for capital costs. The city owns the building and property while leasing it back to the school system with the first agreement a 15-year lease.
