COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – In Branch County high school sports last night, in boys and girls varsity basketball, Coldwater went down to defeat in both games to Jackson Lumen Christi and in the boys action we had on the radio from Lumen Christi, the Titans beat the Cardinals 68-56. Coldwater was on top 14-12 at the end of the first quarter, but over the next two periods, Lumen Christi gained control, outscoring the Cardinals 42-26 to go ahead 54-40 at the end of the third quarter. The Titans lead grew to 18 in the final quarter before they finished up with the 12-point victory for their 16th win of the season.
Logan Targgart was our McDonald’s Player of the Game for Coldwater with a double-double that included 19 points and 13 rebounds, both game high numbers on the night. Collin Warner added 13 points for the Cardinals, who slipped to 2-11 in the Interstate Eight Conference and 3-14 overall. The Titans, who are ranked 6th in the state in Class-C, improved their Interstate 8 leading mark to 12-1 and their overall record to 16-1. Coldwater wraps up conference play Friday night at home against Charlotte.
There was a split in last night’s reserve games with the Coldwater junior varsity beating Lumen Christi 46-34 with 8 points for Nick Aker while Erik Roberts had a game-high 11 rebounds. The Cardinals lost the freshman game 45-33 with 12 points for Christian Pine and 11 rebounds for Joe Severn.
In the girls varsity game at Coldwater, it was a 54-46 win for Lumen Christi. Just like in the boys contest, the Lady Cardinals had a 14-12 lead at the end of the first quarter. The Titans then pulled ahead 28-25 for a 3-point edge at halftime and they took control by winning the third quarter 17-6. The 14 point deficit to start the final quarter was too much for Coldwater to overcome and the loss dropped their record to 3-10 in the conference and 6-13 overall. Kendall Galloway had 16 points in the loss while Carlee Smoker added 12 points and 8 rebounds.
Coldwater won the junior varsity game 54-37. Isabella Foley had 17 points while Jamie Wellet had a double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds. Madison Marsh added 11 points in the victory.
In girls only varsity games last night, Bronson traveled to Colon and beat the Magi 62-8. Kinslea Blouin had 15 points with 10 apiece for Payton Robinson and Skyler Sobeski. Quincy lost at home to Concord 63-28 with 17 points for Cailyn Hines. The defeat dropped their record to 1-12 in the Big Eight and 1-18 overall. Also in the Big 8, Union City fell at home to Homer 65-24. Haley Harty had 8 points in the loss. Union City slips to 1-12 in the conference and 3-16 overall.
Tonight in high school sports, there’s just one event on the schedule with a makeup girls basketball game for Bronson with the Lady Vikings playing at Centreville. Today on the Coaches Corner, it’s Bronson girls basketball coach Andy Hatt.
Yesterday in middle school sports, in Girls basketball, Bronson lost twice at Comstock. In the 8th grade game, Comstock won 53-36 with a game high 22 points in the loss for Ashton Wronikowski. Bronson fell 52-35 in the 7th grade game with 26 points for Keona Salesman.
