COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – In high school baseball Thursday, Coldwater earned a split at home against Marshall as they started league play in the Interstate Eight Conference and in the action that we had on the radio, the host Cardinals rallied to capture the opener 12-8 before the Redhawks won the nightcap 7-1. In game one, Coldwater trailed 3-0 and 7-5 before they took control by scoring 7 runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. Brandon Lewis, Austin Krzeminski and Morgan Sims each had 2 hits and an RBI while Randall Linton added a hit and two RBI’s. Linton was also the winning pitcher, tossing two-and-a-third innings in relief of Lewis and Linton was our McDonald’s Player of the Game for Coldwater.
In the second game, the Cardinals were unable to overcome six errors and the offense was limited to 5 singles. Jordan Butler was the losing pitcher. Krzeminski, who was the starting catcher in the nightcap, was our Player of the Game after throwing out 4 Marshall runners who were attempting steals. The split left Coldwater with a 6-and-3 record as they get ready to host tomorrow’s annual Pat Lowe Memorial Invitational.
Coldwater swept yesterday’s junior varsity doubleheader at Marshall 13-4 and 11-0. The winning pitchers were Kameron Miller and Collin Torrey. In game one, Calab Letendre had 2 singles and a double and 3 RBI’S and then added a single, double, and triple in the nightcap. Torrey, who tossed a 1-hitter, had 2 doubles and 3 RBI’s.
Also in baseball Thursday, Bronson dropped a doubleheader at Kalamazoo Christian 4-3 and 3-0. Noah Roberts and Coty Bennett were the losing pitchers. Tommy Littlefield had 2 hits in the opener for the Vikings, who slip to 1-and-7.
Yesterday in softball, Coldwater swept their doubleheader at home over Marshall 15-0 and 13-0 to improve their record to 8-0. Stacy Guzy had a 1-hitter in game one while Payton Watson had a single and a double and 2 RBI’s. Gabby Milnes added a double and a single while Jamie Wellet and Morgan Howard each had 2 singles. In the second game, Darlene Horn had a 2-hitter while Michaela Gillette had an over-the-fence home run and a single and Wellet, Guzy and Milnes had 2 singles apiece. Coldwater swept the JV doubleheader at Marshall 35-1 and 26-2.
Also in softball, Bronson split a twinbill at Kalamazoo Christian, taking the opener 5-2 before dropping the nightcap 9-5. Skyler Sobeski earned the victory in game one, allowing 4 singles over 7 innings. Hannah Hoover had a triple and a single and 2 RBI’s. Adyson Lasky suffered the defeat in the second game. Sobeski had a double and single and 2 RBI’s. The non-conference split left Bronson’s record at 7-and-2.
I girls soccer, Quincy opened conference play at home with a 6-1 win in the I-S-L over Jackson Christian. The Orioles started the scoring as Cailyn Hines netted the first of her four goals on the night off an assist from Hanna Kaser just 1:32 seconds into the game. Hines scored again just over a minute later off a throw in from Angelica Sussex to make it 2-0. It was Hines once more at the 30:18 mark as she scored off a rebound from the goal keeper. Jackson Christian then scored their only goal at 16:48 before Quincy’s Liz Counterman scored the first of her two goals off a corner kick from Gaby Masson to put the Orioles up 4-1 at the half. After the break, Counterman added her second goal at 29:08 off another assist from Kaser. Hines got her 4th goal at the 27:07 mark off an assist from Counterman to make it a 6-1 final score. Haley Askew had 6 saves on the night. Quincy out shot Jackson Christian 17-8 while improving their overall record to 2-2-and-1.
In track, in Wednesday’s Big Eight Jonesville tri-meet, Quincy split with Jonesville with a win for the Girls while the Orioles were swept in action against Homer. In the Girls victory, Kayti Hawkins won the shot put and discus, Kati Spalding took first place in the two hurdles races, and Haley Bean won the 800 and 32-hundred meter runs. In the Boys loss to Homer, Jonathan Purvis won the shot put and discus while Tanner Parshall was a triple winner in the 100, 200, and 400 meter dashes and Andrew Karney finished first in the hurdles races. For the Girls against Homer, Hawkins again won the shot put and discus as well as the high jump while Spalding won the pole vault and 100 meter hurdles.
On today’s high school sports schedule, in Coldwater boys golf, it’s the annual Cardinal Invitational with 18 teams competing at the Coldwater Golf Course. In girls tennis, Coldwater plays at home against Three Rivers. And in track, Bronson is at the Comstock Invitational while Union City is at the Marshall Invitational.
