COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – Yesterday in high school boys golf. it was the annual Cardinal Invitational at the Coldwater Golf Course, and Coldwater’s varsity team placed 5th out of 17 teams with a team score of 331, while the Cardinal JVs placed 12th with 366 and Quincy finished 17th with 556. Portage Central won the tournament with a team score of 308, 7 better than 2nd place Ann Arbor Skyline, and the Mustangs’ Cam Phelps defeated teammate Jared Lyons to take medalist honors after both shot low rounds of 74. Coldwater’s varsity team was paced by Cameron Ruge, whose round of 77 was good for 6th place, while Keegan Dwyer and Nolan Duda each shot 84, and Stephen Boston shot 86. For the Cardinal JVs, Jacob Fair had 82, Tanner Bowers 89, Nick Galliers 92, and Brendan Hanna 103. Quincy was led by Noah Shilling with 132, Kale Christian with 140, Lou Richardson with 141, and Mason Shilling with 143.
In girls tennis, Coldwater was a 6-2 winner against Three Rivers at Heritage Park. The Lady Cardinals swept all four doubles flights and also received wins from Emma Grife at first singles and Karissa Harrell and third singles.
In track and field, Bronson was in action at the Comstock Invitational, with the girls placing second and the boys third. For the Lady Vikings, the team of Jill Pyles, Maryselva Albarran, Kelcy Sikorski, and Adriana Sanchez won the 1600m relay, and Joselyn Cabrera finished first in the discus. For Bronson’s boys, Eric Toledo and Sean Kenny finished 1-2 in the discus. Toledo also placed first in the shot put, while Wesley Disbro won in the pole vault.
The Coldwater freshman baseball team has an 0-4 record to start their season following a doubleheader sweep against the Niles Brandywine JV team, losing both ends of the twinbill 7-6 and 12-2. Wednesday, they fell to Bronson’s JVs 5-4 and 14-4.
On today’s busy schedule: in baseball, Coldwater entertains Quincy, Mattawan, Portland St. Patrick, Gull Lake, and Three Rivers in the Pat Lowe Memorial Invitational at Lowe and Borden Fields, while Union City hosts its own invitational, with Bronson among the teams in the field. In softball, Coldwater hosts its annual Lady Cardinal Invitational at the Rotary Softball Complex, Union City hosts its own invitational, Bronson plays at the Homer Invitational, and Quincy visits Sturgis. In track, Quincy is at the Pork Weiss Invitational at Homer. In girls soccer, Coldwater plays at Eaton Rapids. And in boys golf, Coldwater travels to the Thornapple Creek Golf Club for the Kalamazoo Christian Invitational.
