COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – Proposal One was among the topics under discussion at yesterday’s work session for Branch County Commissioners. The statewide vote on the road funding question is happening on May Fifth. The Deputy Director of the Michigan Association of Counties reviewed for Commissioners why MAC is endorsing the proposal.
Steve Curry admitted it’s a tough sell and he believes it will come down to who comes out to vote. He said there a lot of people who don’t like the proposal but the question is, do they not like it enough to show up at the polls and vote against it.
Steve Yencich, President and CEO of the Michigan Lodging and Tourism Association says the condition of Michigan’s roads may mean big business for auto repair shops, but it’s hurting tourism. According to Yencich, the bad roads are giving Pure Michigan a black eye and don’t forget that the state is uniquely a drive-to destination. That’s why he is endorsing Proposal One when it comes up for a vote in a week and-a-half.
He says they hear a lot of complaints about it, with the bone-jarring pot holes probably at the top of the list, but Yencich says bottom line, he’s really worried about the people that say nothing and then never come back. He fears that if the measure fails, that whatever legislators come up with as an alternative and without public approval, will be even worse.
