COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – In high school baseball, Coldwater clinched at least a share of the Interstate 8 title after they swept Pennfield in a makeup doubleheader at Lowe Field, 5-0 and 7-4. In the opener, Brayton Rzepka pitched a complete game 3-hit shutout with 2 walks and 6 strikeouts; Nick Shaw had the big hit with a 3-run homer, while Brendan Spangler added an RBI double. Brandon Lewis picked up the win in the nightcap, going 5-2/3 innings with 5 hits, 5 walks, and 3 strikeouts; he helped his cause offensively by going 2-for-3 with an RBI triple. The Cardinals improve to 22-6 overall, 10-3 in the Interstate 8, a full game ahead of 2nd place Parma Western with one league game left.
In girls soccer, Coldwater lost a non-conference contest to visiting Brooklyn Columbia Central 5-1. Hailey Danielson scored the lone Cardinal goal in the 2nd half off an assist from Bre Eddy. Coldwater drops its record to 9-7-2.
Quincy lost an ISL contest at Jonesville 2-1. The Orioles tied the game 8 minutes into the 2nd half on a Gaby Masson goal assisted by Cailyn Hines, while the game-winning goal was scored near the halfway point of the 2nd half. Quincy drops to 7-7-2 overall, 5-3-1 in the ISL.
Results of the MHSAA Division 2 Track Regional at Mason, whick Coldwater competed in, were unavailable as of the time of publication; results should be posted to this page this weekend.
On today’s schedule: In baseball, Coldwater hosts Bronson, Portage Northern, Carleton Airport, Royal Oak Shrine, and Eastside (IN) in the annual Stout & Sons Invitational at Lowe and Borden Fields, while Union City hosts Constantine. In softball, it’s the Coldwater Varsity/JV Invitational, with Bronson, Quincy, and Gull Lake also participating. In track, Quincy hosts Bronson and 14 other teams in an MHSAA Division 3 Regional, while Union City joins 15 other teams at the Division 4 Centreville Regional. And in girls soccer, Quincy plays at Sturgis.
