LANSING, MI (WTVB) – Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel announced Monday, her intervention in Consumers Energy’s upcoming June electric rate increase request, citing the utility’s “relentless and unsustainable” cycle of hikes just one week after the MPSC approved a $276.6 million rate increase.
Effective May 1, the prior approval will raise average monthly residential bills by approximately $6.46, leading Nessel to pledge strict scrutiny of the new filing to protect 1.9 million ratepayers.
Consumers Energy maintains that these frequent requests are necessary to fund their “Reliability Roadmap” for infrastructure upgrades and power outage prevention.
Nessel, however, highlighted her office’s history of reducing rate hikes by billions of dollars, promising to examine all costs, including executive travel expenses, in the upcoming case.

Thank you so much Ms. Nessel. I truly appreciate the things you are doing to help control our utility rates. This is the second article that I’ve read concerning rate hikes that you have questioned and not just handed over the increases that they had asked for. I say kudos to you Ms. Nessel for standing with your constituents and not big
corporations.
In conclusion you will have my vote as long as you run for any political office.
