COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – The Coldwater boys track team has captured its first conference title in several decades, winning yesterday’s Interstate 8 Championship meet at Marshall. The Cardinals finished first with 122 points while Charlotte took second place with 112 points. In the girls meet, Coldwater finished seventh.
Helping lead the Boys to the title with their first place efforts were Logan Targgart in the shot put and discus and Blaze Watson in the pole vault. The Cardinals piled up enough points to win the meet thanks to quite a few second, third, and fourth place showings in a number of events. Boys head track coach Jeff Schorfhaar reports it’s believed that Coldwater’s last league track title was won at least 40 years ago.
The Coldwater girls team yesterday had two runner-up finishers with Ashley Chase second in the 100 meter dash and Hannah Parrish second in the shot put.
In baseball, Coldwater is the outright winner of the Interstate 8 title. The Cardinals, who were idle yesterday, have a 10-3 league record and were guaranteed first place when second place Parma Western lost Tuesday to Marshall and fell to 9-5 in the I-8.
Elsewhere in baseball, Quincy split their doubleheader at Concord. In the opener, Quincy beat the Yellow Jackets 3-2 in ten innings. Tyler Powell earned the victory with Hunter Haylett picking up the save. Jake Rider had 4 hits including two doubles and scored twice. In the 5-inning nightcap, Quincy was limited to one hit and lost 6-0.
Bronson lost 4-2 at Lake Michigan Catholic. Coty Bennett suffered the defeat on the mound. Brenden Bell and Thadd Herman had 2 hits apiece. The Vikings committed 3 errors and left nine runners on base.
Yesterday in softball, Coldwater swept a doubleheader at home over Pennfield 4-3 and 4-1. Darlene Horn was the winning pitcher in the opener. Katy Stanton had 3 singles while Kendall Galloway had 2 hits, including the winning walk-off RBI single in the bottom of the seventh. Morgan Howard added a home run in the victory. In the nightcap, Stacy Guzy picked up the victory with a complete game four hitter with 5 strikeouts and one walk.
In the JV games, it was also a sweep over Pennfield with Coldwater winning 23-10 and 27-11. Picking up the victories were Izzy Foley and Emma Stanley. Foley also had 4 singles and a double with 3 RBI’s in the opener. In the second game, Jalynn Snyder had a triple and 2 single with 2 RBI’s.
Also in softball yesterday, Bronson’s Skyler Sobeski tossed a no-hitter in a 5-0 win at Buchanan with 16 strikeouts. Kelsey Robinson had 3 singles and an RBI while Hannah Hoover had a home run. Bronson is 9-0 in the BCS East and 27-7 overall.
Tuesday in girls soccer, Quincy was a 6-1 winner at home over Hanover Horton with the victory giving the Orioles a third place finish in the Independent Soccer League. Quincy led 5-1 at the end of the first half with two goals apiece for Cailyn Hines and Liz Counterman and one for Ally Parrish. Picking up assists were Counterman, Mackenzie Moore and Payton Hines. The Orioles wrapped up the scoring with a second half goal from Cailyn Cook with an assist from Counterman. Quincy is now 8-8-1 on the season and 6-3-1 in the Western Division of ISL. The Orioles will play Friday night at Clinton in a Divisional cross over game.
Today in high school sports, in girls soccer, it’s Coldwater at Jackson Northwest in the championship game of the Interstate Eight Tournament Silver Division. The match starts at 4 p.m. with the JV game to follow, with the early kickoff because of Senior Scholarship Night. In baseball and softball, Coldwater is at home against Harper Creek as the Cardinals finish up their doubleheaders against the Beavers in the nightcaps that were postponed back on May 8th. In baseball only, it’s Bronson at Union City. In track, Quincy hosts Union City and the rest of the Big Eight schools in the Conference Meet. And Bronson is at Niles Brandywine for the BCS Invitational.
