COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – – A plan to reorganize the Branch County Building Department was brought forward by the Board of Commissioners during their work session on Thursday.
Administrator Frank Walsh said in his memo to the Commissioners that if his request is approved, the reorganization would take effect on June 15.
He said the department currently has a strong fund balance due to the influx of solar inspection fees coupled with the county’s $480,000 realignment of fees reimbursed to inspectors. But Walsh is not convinced the annual budget can sustain two full-time employees on a long-term basis.
The proposal calls for a current vacancy in the building department with a salary of just over $61,000 to stay unoccupied.
Walsh says the plan is to cross train Equalization Department employee Samantha Dey to serve the Building Department during the times that building inspector Tiffany Watson is out of the office. Under this plan, the county would increase Dey and Watson’s hourly rates to $25.18 and $25.56 respectively.
Walsh says the plan would offer the county huge savings over the course of ten years
Commissioners are expected to take formal action on the request during their regular meeting Tuesday afternoon.
