QUINCY, MI (WTVB) – The Branch County Animal Control Shelter may have to be re-located following the blaze a week ago yesterday that heavily damaged the building south of Quincy in Algansee Township. That was the word Thursday from Branch County Sheriff John Pollack, who updated the situation at a County Commissioners work session meeting. According to Pollack, insurance adjusters have examined the site but a final report isn’t yet available.
Pollack also said County Animal Control Officer Ernie Baker is close to being able to resume his duties. Baker is using space at the Sheriff’s Department for a temporary office and should soon again be picking up animals. The six dogs that were in the building when the fire broke out were rescued. The blaze was blamed on a faulty incinerator at the west end of the shelter.
Pollack praised the on-going assistance of the Branch County Humane Society, which operates just a bit north of the shelter on Ray-Quincy Road. The Humane Society has taken in strays since the fire with any overflow going to St. Joseph County Animal Control.
