COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – Members of the Branch County Community Foundation Youth Advisory Council or YAC have made the decision to provide a grant to encourage homeless youth to take part in recreation activities. Students are being identified through the Branch County Coalition Against Domestic Violence McKinney-Vento coordinator. The $2,000 grant can be used for early release days, leagues, free court and track time, which will work on a voucher system to track users at the Browne Recreation Center.
YAC coordinator Daniela Angevine say they realize that even though there are homeless children and teens in the community, it’s still important for them to have recreational opportunities and to take advantage of the new Recreation Center. Angevine also said this project ties to another initiative they are involved with in that it promotes healthy eating and exercise. Julie Santure, Director of Coldwater Recreation, says they want the entire community to use the Center and is sure Dr. Browne would be pleased to see this partnership, making recreation accessible to even more kids in the community. YAC seeks to identify and address youth issues in the community and is dedicated to effective fund development, and youth empowerment, and grant making.
Anyone ages 12-21 is welcome to apply for YAC membership. The only criteria are commitment to attending meetings and participating in YAC events and a love for and desire to serve the community.
