LANSING, MI (WTVB) – Much has been written over the past few days about the release of gigabytes of data by hackers who broke into the extramarital-affair dating website Ashley Madison. A review of the leaked database by MIRS News reveals that out of 36 million registered users, 17 had email addresses that ended in “michigan.gov”; of those, 12 could be tied to entries in the state employee directory. Two of the 12 unnamed state workers contacted by MIRS weren’t sure how their state-issued email addresses wound up in the Ashley Madison database. The other 10 didn’t reply.
Four of the leaked addresses came from the Department of Corrections, and two each came from the Michigan State Police and the Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs. The use of state-issued email addresses to access Ashley Madison violates the state’s acceptable use policy for employees.
