ANGOLA, IN (WTVB) – For the second time in less than a week two Fort Wayne residents were arrested in Steuben County by Indiana State Troopers after crossing the Michigan border to visit a marijuana dispensary. ISP says during the stop they uncovered a large stash of marijuana products and two firearms.
The driver, 21-year-old Aiden M. Rouns, was stopped at mile marker 350 for an unilluminated license plate.
Upon opening the window, troopers smelled burnt marijuana, and both Rouns and his passenger, 27-year-old Jordan M. Shears, , admitted to smoking a joint as police pulled them over.
A subsequent search of the vehicle revealed a legally owned handgun and a semi-automatic rifle alongside a “grocery list” of illicit cannabis items, including infused Mojo Wooky Cookie Bars, multiple Liquid Diamond vape cartridges, and 28 grams of Runtz Pie marijuana flower.
Although this marks the first set of drug charges for both men, evidence found inside the vehicle suggests this was not their first cross-border drug run.
State troopers discovered several time-stamped receipts from the California Michigan Cannabis Company in Montgomery, including a past receipt dating back to July.
The documentation detailed multiple distinct dispensary purchases made over last Thursday afternoon and just minutes before their Friday morning arrest.
Rouns now faces misdemeanor charges for possession of controlled substances, marijuana, and drug paraphernalia, carrying a potential sentence of up to 21 months.
Shears faces up to one year and three months behind bars on similar possession and paraphernalia charges.
Just last week a Fort Wayne couple were arrested on 69 in Steuben County a short time after making a cross boarder marijuana run to Coldwater.
All marijuana products do remain illegal in the Hoosier state.
